Letter to the editor: Vote ‘Yes’ for our future
Please note: This letter reflects opinions regarding the November 2022 school referendum to construct a new, combined elementary and middle school. It does not represent the current 2024 Cape Elizabeth school proposal.

As a current student at CEHS, I have been with the Cape Elizabeth School Department since I started school in kindergarten. I have seen the jumbled mess of a building that both Pond Cove and the middle school are firsthand, and I want to voice with urgency how essential it is to redo our schools from scratch. Some examples of things that can’t be fixed by renovation:
1. The fourth grade wing is in California (not literally, but it takes about six to seven minutes to walk to the fourth grade wing from the main office at a normal pace).
2. The eighth grade wing is a fire hazard. If there were a fire in certain areas of the current school, the eighth graders would be trapped.
3. There are lots of long hallways that are a waste of acreage. The plan for the new school has a smaller footprint acreage-wise than the current schools due to the fact that it utilizes vertical space as well.
There are so many more issues with the current school that would cost the taxpayers a fortune more than just redoing the entire school. Vote YES on the new school buildings, not because of YOUR future but because of OURS
