Letter to the editor: Cape is worth this investment

Please note: This letter reflects opinions regarding the November 2022 school referendum to construct a new, combined elementary and middle school. It does not represent the current 2024 Cape Elizabeth school proposal.

BY HEATHER REEVES

This morning as I started to write a letter backing the $115.9 million new schools project, I stumbled upon a news item.

Maine has just opened a new $143 million corrections center, which will house 463 inmates. The new build replaces the old 1919 facility. Cape’s proposal covers 3(!) schools. I could not help but compare the two projects, and wonder why the prison was a go, but bright, welcoming spaces for our 1000 kids is such a hard sell? I’d like to think that our community supports our children enough to provide a safe space, conducive to learning and free from lead pipes, mold, rodents, and leaking roofs.

I’d like to think that our community values education more than it does incarceration. I believe that our community can come together to build a brighter future for our kids and for our town. Cape Elizabeth is worth this investment.
