Letter to the editor: In the interest of the greater good

Please note: This letter reflects opinions regarding the November 2022 school referendum to construct a new, combined elementary and middle school. It does not represent the current 2024 Cape Elizabeth school proposal.

BY LAUREN PERREAULT

I am writing to express gratitude to all the Cape residents who do not have children in the school system who are nevertheless in favor of the proposed school renovations. It takes a special type of person to make an investment in something that may not affect him or her directly, but which will certainly affect the greater community.

Our children are living in a world with great uncertainty. None of us adults alive knows what it is like to live through a pandemic at age 5...or 17. These children — our future — deserve to have learning spaces that will support their growth and evolution… especially now. Especially after what we have lived through.

I will not use this letter to repeat the very important arguments that have been made in

support of the details of the project. All of that information is available on AdvancingCape.com and I encourage all residents to do their own research. But please also check your internal compass — your heart. What responsibility do you have to the greater good? What

can you do to contribute to the future, to our children?

Whether one likes it or not, one cannot escape the fact that we do live in a communal society, where we pay taxes to support institutions in the interest of the greater good. That is part of the social contract we each make to enjoy the experience of living in this country. Thank you to all of you who honor this sacred contract.
